Kate Gonzales is a freelance writer, editor and journalist based in California. She partners with newsrooms on reporting and editing projects, and offers copywriting and editing services to government agencies, special districts and other clients.
I’m an independent writer and journalist who puts humanity first. In my reporting, I most often focus on stories pertaining to gender, identity, work and class. As a woman of Mexican descent, I know the importance of correcting the negative tropes of marginalized communities, especially those which the news media have had a hand in crafting. I make it a point to be inclusive in my sourcing, while pushing for better representation in newsrooms and storytelling.
Journalism matters, but never at the expense of the communities whose stories are being told. Accuracy, thoughtfulness and fairness are more important than sensationalism, clicks or even publishing a story first.
My work has been published in Sacramento News & Review, SFGate, CapRadio and other Northern California news outlets. I was recognized with a 2018 California Journalism Award for my reporting on a homeless women’s “street soccer” team, and was a CJA finalist in 2023 for my labor reporting for Comstock’s Magazine. Alongside running a freelance writing and editing business, I’m currently an associate editor at The Imprint, a nonprofit news outlet covering the nation’s foster care and youth incarceration systems. There, I tap into my strength for copy editing to ensure these critical stories are accurate.
I envision a future where fact-checkers abound, and where people trust news organizations because those organizations have earned their trust.
I am currently available for news reporting and copy editing assignments, as well as writing and editing work for government agencies, foundations and other sectors. Please reach out at katemgonzales3@gmail.com to discuss potential editorial projects.
